Experian Population Profiles

Lifestyle characteristics: population segmentation and profiling

As part of Barking and Dagenham’s ‘One B&D’ transformation programme, we have worked with Experian plc on the ‘Experian Customer Insight and Profiling Project’ to create a deeper understanding of the local population to drive service improvement and redesign. By combining data from NHS Barking and Dagenham and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, the project defined the health and social needs and types of services that are required for each household in the area. This means that services can be delivered in a much more targeted way, leading to improved customer outcomes, cost efficiencies and satisfaction. The project started in November 2008 and in June 2009 Borough specific profiles became available detailing the uptake and use of council and NHS service.

The profiles use a combination of data on the utilisation of local services and MOSAIC™, a national set of lifestyle information about households. This brings together over 400 data sources including health, education, employment and deprivation. It combines this with other sources of information such as consumer spending patterns to paint a rich picture of our population in terms of demographics, socio-economic factors and lifestyles. The profiles have been refreshed in 2010 by renewing the local base data sets and 33 new local datasets have been added.
