JSNA Summary

Public agencies make better decisions when they jointly assess, view and analyse data about people, services and issues.

The Prime Minister

"Greater transparency across Government is at the heart of our shared commitment to enable the public to hold politicians and public bodies to account..."

Letter to Government Depts on opening up data.

The Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) is an assessment of the health and wellbeing needs of a local area.  Since 2007 it has been a statutory duty for primary care trusts and local authorities to undertake this assessment.

It is intended to provide a shared, evidence based, consensus about key local priorities and support commissioning to improve health and wellbeing outcomes and reduce health inequalities. In practice, the JSNA process is led by the Joint Director of Public Health, the Corporate Director of Adult and Community Services and the Corporate Director of Children’s Services.

The Borough Commissioners, Clinical Commissioning Committee, Voluntary Sector and Clinical commissioning groups also contribute to the JSNA project and findings.  This is the fourth JSNA from the Barking and Dagenham Partnership.

Data Atlas

In the main, the data that we hold is information that everyone can see and use, especially when it is 'aggregated' up to ward or borough level.  That's where Geowise comes in.  Getting all the data we have available up on to the site and continuing to build its sophistication is a long process, and we are very much at the beginning, but in time this will be a key repository of vital information to help people from across the Partnership to submit bids for funding, plan service development, and understand the needs of our local population.

The data atlas is supplemented by the narrative joint strategic needs assessments documents which can be found here.

Information available

Maps and statistics are available on a London Borough, ward and lower super output level (lsoa) level for comparison to other areas.

We are building up the data atlas with more indicators over time.

User Guide

To enable the user to achieve greater use and understanding of the atlas it is highly recommended that the user guide is explored prior to opening the atlas.

Some tips

If you click 'Choose Indicator' - top left - you can select different data from within the data view.  Click on a borough (or ward), for example Barking & Dagenham, and hovering over other boroughs/wards on the map will give you comparators.  If data over time is given, then you will see the trend graph change as well.

If you click print, you will be able to print out the page you are seeing, with maps and graphs included, for future reference.

Call for information

All agencies can contribute data to the Geowise Instant Atlas, so that the analysis possibilities can be as powerful as possible.  If you would like to ensure that information that you hold is included, contact the JSNA team at on their website.
