Elections 2010

General and Local Elections 2010

6 May 2010 saw a General Election taking place, alongside local elections in all wards in Barking & Dagenham.

Full details of the national elections and local elections are available on the Council's website after the links.

The turnout figures for the two constituencies were:  61.8% (Barking) and 63.6% (Dagenham & Rainham).

General election results

Both constituencies had been changed substantially as a result of boundary reorganisations.  Margaret Hodge was re-elected as the MP for Barking, with 54.3% of the vote.  Jon Cruddas was elected to the newly-named constituency of Dagenham and Rainham with 40.3% of the vote.  More details on the Council webpages.

Local election results

The Labour Party won all 51 seats on Barking & Dagenham Council.  Full details of the names of candidates, etc. are on the Council webpages.

The new councillors, including those who have served before and were re-elected, will meet this week informally as a party grouping to decide their formal nominations to Annual Assembly on 19 May, where positions such as Leader of the Council will be appointed for the next 4 years.  The Council's constitution changed before the election and the new system means that the Leader is chosen for the full four-year period, and that s/he has more scope in determining the arrangements for their cabinet.  More details will be posted on the Council website as they become available, and key partnership roles will become apparent in the membership of boards, etc.
